Ford unveils Mustang Dark Horse

Ford unveils Mustang Dark Horse

The Mustang Dark Horse is the culmination of a three-year project that saw the Mustang transformed into a street and track capable machine that features the visual cues to go along with the upgraded performance.

The Ford Mustang line up has been expanded with the addition of the Dark Horse, featuring the most powerful 5.0-litre V8 boasting 500 horsepower and as such setting a new benchmark for American street and track performance.

The Mustang Dark Horse is the culmination of a three-year project that saw the Mustang transformed into a street and track capable machine that features the visual cues to go along with the upgraded performance, all the way down to the availability of carbon fibre wheels from Carbon Revolution.

The Mustang Dark Horse is based on the 2024 Mustang, which has been transformed with a digitally immersive cockpit, as well as new engines and styling to make it the most exhilarating and fun-to-drive Mustang ever.

Sophisticated, yet functional styling

Upfront a bold, shadow graphic surrounds the darkened LED headlamps, which compliment a unique, gloss black grille with trapezoidal nostrils and Mustang Dark Horse unique lower front bumper. Lower side skirts and a fixed rear wing, new race inspired diffuser and darkened quad exhaust tips demonstrate the car’s track focused design cues.

Mustang Dark horse badges adorn the fenders, boot and door sills while a dark anodised pony retains pride of place upfront.

Under the bonnet

The 5.0-litre Coyote V8 engine has been upgraded with components such as specially modified pistons and connecting rods that were first used in the 760hp Ford Performance Mustang Shelby GT500 ensuring that the Dark Horse will deliver the highest level of performance of the all-new Mustang family. A dual throttle-body intake design improves engine breathing and is accentuated by the open nostrils in the front grille.

Shifting is handled by a unique six-speed TREMEC manual transmission featuring a 3D-printed titanium shift ball. Alternatively it can also be paired with Ford’s advanced 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters for fast and precise shifting, from the highway to the racetrack.

Track focussed additions include brake cooling NACA ducts, an auxiliary engine oil cooler, a rear axle cooler and a unique lighter weight radiator with improved cooling capability and more powerful cooling fans.

Under the skin the Dark Horse has been treated to unique chassis tuning in the form of larger rear sway bars, heavy-duty front shocks, 19-inch Brembo front brakes, a Ford Performance strut brace, a K-brace, a Torsen rear differential and standard Pirelli P Zero tyres.

A Handling Package is available to further improve aerodynamics, which includes a unique rear wing incorporating a Gurney Flap, stiffer springs, larger front and rear sway bars and wider Pirelli Trofeo tyres.

Driver focussed cockpit

Performance inspired style and functionality has been added to the driver-centric cockpit. A thick, flat-bottomed steering wheel finished in suede along with Bright Indigo Blue accent stitching incorporates anodised silver paddle shifters on the models ordered with the 10-speed automatic transmission and a dedicated drive mode button at each thumb for quick selection of the desired driving setup. A 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster with customisable screens also includes a variety of drive modes.

This digital instrument cluster flows seamlessly into a 13.2-inch SYNC 4 centre stack behind the same piece of integrated glass and angled towards the driver.

Contrasting blue stitching across the door panels and seats, gearshift gaiter and centre console as well as blue seatbelts add to the ambience of the cabin. The latest B&O Sound System provides crisp audio through 12 speakers and a subwoofer.

Production of next-generation Ford Ranger commences

Production of next-generation Ford Ranger commences

The start of production follows an investment of R15.8 billion in Ford’s local operations and supplier tooling. South African built Rangers will be exported to 100 markets around the world, including Europe.

Production of the next-generation Ford Ranger has commenced at Ford’s Silverton assembly plant in Pretoria, with the local plant becoming the third to commence production globally.

The start of production follows an investment of R15.8 billion in Ford’s local operations and supplier tooling. South African built Rangers will be exported to 100 markets around the world, including Europe.

The exanded operations in South Africa will contribute to job creation and economic development, with 1 200 new jobs added for a third shift needed to support the increased production volumes, taking the workforce to 5 500 employees. In addition, Ford’s supplier network is expected to benefit with approximately 10 000 jobs added across the value chain.

R10.3 billion of the investment was allocated to the transformation and modernisation of the Silverton plant, which included construction of its first on-site Stamping plant, a new highly automated body shop and the introduction of the latest operations on the trim, chassis and final line.

Furthermore, the only Ford owned and operated frame line has been built in the new Tshwane Automotive Special Economic Zone supplier park, located alongside the Silverton assembly plant.

Ford also injected R600 million into its Struandale Engine plant in Gqeberha, which produces all the engines used in the next generation Ranger for South Africa and more than 100 export markets. This investment helped Ford introduce the new 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine program, which comprises cylinder head machining and engine assembly. Upgrades for the next-generation Ranger were also implemented on the existing assembly line for the 2.0-litre single turbo and 2.0-litre Bi-Turbo diesel engines.

Renewed focus on quality

Ford has put immense effort, resources, and the latest technologies in place to ensure that the next-generation Ranger is truly world class, and that the Silverton plant equals the very best globally.

This included decisions to bring the stamping and frame building operations in house and thus ensure complete control of the production quality.

Additional quality control measures include the use of in-line Perceptron measurement systems to provide accurate scanning of every part produced as well as the high-tech GOM ATOS ScanBox blue light scanner system that creates highly detailed 3D models of manufactured components. This ensures real time data throughout production and allows for the rapid identification and addressing of any quality concerns before parts leave the production area.

An uncompromising approach to quality has reshaped every aspect of Ford’s manufacturing operations and is a clear indicator of their commitment to delivering world-class products for their customers around the world.

Hyundai to rebuild original Pony Coupé Concept

Hyundai to rebuild original Pony Coupé Concept

The original Pony and Pony Coupé Concept were rare creations that influenced the designs of multiple production and concept vehicles, including the award winning Ioniq 5 and head turning N Vision 74.

Hyundai has teamed up with Italian design firm GFG Style and father and son founders Giorgetto and Fabrizio Giugiaro to rebuild the influential 1974 Pony Coupé Concept that a young Giorgetto created for Hyundai’s debut at the 1974 Turin Motor show.

The original Pony and Pony Coupé Concept were rare creations that influenced the designs of multiple production and concept vehicles, including the award winning Ioniq 5 and head turning N Vision 74.

In 1974, when Hyundai was still in its infancy, company executives looked to Giorgetto Giugiaro to design Hyundai’s first independent model and Korea’s first mass production car. At the time there was no vehicle design and styling capability in Korea, so Hyundai commissioned Giugiaro to design, make blueprints and build five prototypes, one of which was a coupé. Two of these prototypes, the Pony and the Pony Coupé were shown at the Turin Motor show as part of the brand’s debut to the global market.

With a wedge-style nose, circular headlamps and origami-like geometric lines, the Pony Coupé was intended for North American and European markets, but the project came to a halt in 1981 due to a variety of reasons. While the concept was an unfinished dream at the time, its bold spirit helped kickstart the Korean automotive industry by directly influencing Hyundai’s first independent production models under the Pony nameplate, which were sold around the world between 1975 and 1990.

The design of this concept also served as a huge source of inspiration for Giugiaro’s work on the DeLorean DMC 12 that debuted in 1983 and went on to become an automotive icon thanks to its starring role in the Back to the Future Movies.

In 2019, Hyundai took inspiration from the original Pony for the 45 concept car, which directly influenced the Ioniq 5, which debuted two years later. In 2021, Hyundai reinterpreted the original Pony production car as a restomod electric vehicle concept. In 2022, design cues from the Coupé Concept were once again evident in the crowd-pleasing N Vision 74 hydrogen-hybrid rolling lab development vehicle.

“I designed the Hyundai Pony when I was still a young designer at the start of my career. I felt very proud that I was in charge of creating a vehicle for a company and country that was about to take on a fiercely competitive global market. Now, I’m deeply honoured that Hyundai has asked me to rebuild it for posterity and as a celebration of the brand’s heritage,” said Giugiaro.
